Why is it important to monitor your blood sugar?
Monitoring blood sugar levels is crucial for people with diabetes for several important reasons:
Maintaining Stable Blood Glucose Levels
This allows for adjustments in daily life factors (exercise, diet, stress, medications) to avoid excessively high (hyperglycemia) or low (hypoglycemia) blood sugar levels.
Preventing Long-Term Complications
Monitoring helps reduce the risk of these complications by keeping blood glucose levels close to normal (check the type 2 diabetes page for more information on long-term complications).
Managing Symptoms in Real-Time
This helps avoid immediate complications from hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Severe complications can arise in either case, such as seizures, loss of consciousness, and even coma.1

How to Measure your Blood Sugar?
You can measure your blood sugar at home using a device called a glucometer. Your doctor will inform you of how often you need to measure your blood sugar.
Target values vary from person to person; you can determine your target blood sugar levels with your doctor.
Your pharmacist or diabetes educator can provide you with a glucometer; make sure to ask them for the device that suits you and how to use it.
Your doctor may also suggest having your HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) level measured regularly to check your average blood sugar over the past three months.2
